THE ICELAND DIARY

FÚSK's one year anniversary

With a great exhibition by Edda Karólína Ævarsdóttir, books, art prints, song and dance, sunset, fire and good people the first anniversary was celebrated.

Fúsk is a studio space for individuals and groups in cultural projects. They encourage a cross-disciplinary collaboration within the art world. Their goal is to enhance cultural activities and inforce a public debate as well as education. The project is a testing ground for creative projects, experimental builds and ground-up solutions.

The project is a cultural cannonball, people will get time and space to research and develop ideas that then can move back into society when the time is right. Fúsk is also available for shorter projects like photography, movie productions, concerts and exhibitions.

A week-long festival is coming up at FÚSK in Gufunes with a series of concerts, lectures, art exhibitions and workshops.

BREAD

My friends Inga & Magnús invited us for a pretty awesome brunch. Inga’s sourdough breads are heaven and as soon as I can call a place my home again, I want to start baking too.

THE SHED IN HAFNAFJÖRÐUR

Visiting my neighbour next door. Anthony and his wife Ýr run THE SHED - next to many other endevours - and I just love this place, their chicken, how they live and what they are doing for the community. Check out their website THE SHED & the wonderful playlists in their JOURNAL section. They also rent out a beautiful flat called THE GARDEN COTTAGE. If you plan on visiting Iceland and explore the area, you are in the best hands here.

Gyða

The first person I see after the long quarantine life is my wonderful friend Gyða for tea and dragon tarot. What a treat! We are so lucky to catch each other before she goes to New York for a few months. How luxuriously pampered I feel by her presence, our conversations and that it is possible to hug and hang out and not having to worry about a thing.

You can always start again.

That was the message my tea bag delivered to me this morning. It’s my first day in Iceland after a year of nerve wrecking isolation and heavy Covid lockdowns and journey. Packed up our entire Berlin life and did a big jump into the uncertainty of trying to live in Iceland.

Me and my son stay in a small flat in Hafnafjörður for the next weeks and are not allowed to see anyone, but we can go on long walks and that’s what we do.

The wind blows away depression and the sea swallows the bitterness.

For the first time in many years I feel there is something really good happening, something to trust, embrace and look forward to.

Walking up and down the coastline my gaze is caught by the million ways moss grows on lava stones, it’s my daily meditation to observe and capture the colours of this calming symbiosis. Against all odds and weather, these plants grow on rocks despite and because of it, they are my spirit plant for the next weeks.
